---------------------------------------------------------------------
I purchased on March 15, 2007 a Dell heavy duty work station with following specs:
Model: DELL Precision 490, BIOS Date: 04-04-07 Windows Version: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Ultimate.
Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 5140 @ 2.33GHz Clock Speed: 2.4GHz, 2 Cache Size 4096. Memory: TOTAL=2048MB.Slot-1 [DIMM 1] 1024MB, Slot-2 [DIMM 2]: 1024MB.  Network Card: Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller. Storage: SATA HDD 298.0GB. Price: as of Jun 15, 2007: $2,896.00 (without tax,  no display included). I paid almost $4000.00 in March 2007 with 24” LCD Screen.

3 months passed by and I am still unable to put my faith and confident on this machine.  It crashed few times in very beginning. Loaded and reloaded couple of times. Norton Antivirus which was claimed to work with Windows Vista failed and forced me to reformat and install from scratch. Tried second time loading newer software from  Norton’s online server, did not work, uninstalled and installed new McAfee for VISTA. It didn’t work first time but, uninstalled and reinstalled download from McAfee’s website newer version. It is working now. Microsoft Office 2007 Professional is crashing a lot. Whenever I try to use Microsoft Word, it is having unexpected error and just shuts program off. If I try to open any document created in Office 2003 edition it warns that this is not compatible with this version of the MS Office, find online solution! Well, there was no online solution for this in last few months; finally last week I got a patch from MS website to resolve this issue. Isn’t that weird that the program made by Microsoft Created by Microsoft Supported by Microsoft but, still, cannot recognize the problem and solution for it…give me a break.

I planned to make this one my stable business computer so I can run my related software and programs. I do use these: Acrobat to create PDF, Macromedia Studio for web site, Roxio Media Creator 9 (this is the only version works with VISTA), Adobe Photoshop CS2, Scansoft PaperPort 11 Pro and Peachtree2007 for my accounting. It took me a while to figure out which version will work with VISTA and I was collecting all these updates and new software for this system. Still it did not work the way I was thinking. Even there was no Peachtree software to work with VISA finally I was able to get one last week. I was installing yesterday and learn that Norton Anti Virus is still running… what? Don’t you remember I uninstalled Norton Anti Virus and installed McAfee! Hold on . . . I need to scratch my head and pull my hair… I do need to reformat this system at least one more time to ensure that it can be trusted but, before I take that step I am still waiting Microsoft to release a big patch for this Windows VISTA (yea it may called Service Pack 1). Each time you try to connect network drive or Local Network, it goes with a long process to diagnose whole network and provide you the VIEW, do I have to wait each-time few minutes for this! I like the Windows XP or Windows 2000 which just connected if you connect one time. One more thing, each time you format and reload the software, each software will cause you trouble for licensing you also have to go through all patches download and updates again.

Now I do have two systems with dual switch so can use my old system, which is pretty good thou, P4-3.2GHz, 2GB RAM, ATI x1600 Video Card and Asus Motherboard, Windows XP Pro… a solid I believe, and new VISA System to check every-day and see where I am standing! You can imagine after 3 months and spending almost $5000.00 (including Software) I am still on wait . . . I am a computer tech guy and I do these kinds of troubleshooting everyday. If I am having difficulties dealing with these issues what would be happening for end user who does not know any technical work or how to deal with errors. So, I have been telling all my customers to stay away from Windows VISA till Service Pack 1 is released or at least the end of this year 2007. Yes my $5grand system is still a showcase for me.

By the way, if you use only internet, email, music and related media things than you should get it ASAP.
